For five decades, NIPFP has served as a centre for capacity building
and professional development in public finance. Over the course of its history, the
Institute has organised more than 200 specialised training programmes and workshops, whose
themes have evolved alongside India's economic landscape. Early sessions focused on
budgetary projection techniques, sales tax administration, and the economics of income
taxation. Today, the curriculum encompasses the Goods and Services Tax, macroeconomic
management, intergovernmental fiscal transfers, banking and public expenditure
management.
NIPFP has developed strong and continuing associations with the Government of India through
its training programmes. The Institute regularly hosts customised public finance modules for
Officer Trainees and Probationers of the Indian Economic Service (IES) and the Indian Audit
and Accounts Service (IA&AS). Beyond induction training, NIPFP conducts mid-career
programmes for senior IAS officers and specialised workshops for Finance Department
officials from state governments across the country.
The Institute's training mandate extends equally to the academic community. The recurring
Refresher Course in Public Economics, designed for university and college teachers, keeps
academic curricula aligned with current fiscal realities. The more recent “Doing Research in
Public Finance” (DRIP) programme offers doctoral candidates structured exposure to research
methods in public finance. NIPFP has also taken its training expertise beyond India's
borders, conducting workshops on fiscal federalism for international delegates.
